Analysis of Previous Student's Work

Here is the text version of my analysis of A2 student’s work, which I plan to eventually turn into a video with a voice over of myself.

Juliana Mariz

Pixie Lott – All About Tonight

Notes

·         Video begins UTS shot of girl getting ready – linking to lyrics of song “all about tonight”

·         Editing – sped up footage, works with quick pace of song

·         Fading in and out of shots – shows passing of time

·         CU MES make up, jewellery etc.

·         Cam pan along with feet “I bought a new pair of shoes”

·         Not linear narrative structure – video cuts from different times (going out – signing in studio – going out)

·         Like how video cuts on beat

Personal response to the video

·         Chose to analyse this one because it’s of a similar genre to my own song (dance/pop)

·         Wanted to see how she used different shots to keep the music video interesting as is quite a repetitive song

·         She also used flashbacks/reflective shots

·         Quite worried that my video will be boring too

Script (to be turned into a video)

Today I have analysed a previous student’s A2 music video. For this task I chose to analyse Juliana Mariz’s coursework who created a music video to the song Pixie Lott – All About Tonight. The main reason that I chose to analyse her work was because the song is quite similar to my own, as both Pixie Lott and Calvin Harris specialise in the genre of pop/dance music.

So the video begins with an over the shoulder shot of the main protagonist in the mirror getting ready. I thought this was an interesting shot and I liked the way which it links to the lyrics because it is obvious from the mise-en-scene that she is getting ready for a night out.

Through editing, Juliana speeds up the footage, in order for the video to match the quick pace of the song. I thought this worked well and will consider doing the same for my video.

Another similarity between my music video and Julianna’s is that she doesn’t have a strict linear narrative. For my music videos I have planned to show reflective shots of the main protagonist away from the main location, which Juliana has done as well, which the audience can see when the “artist” is singing in the studio or dancing by the garage.

I decided that I would use the flashback scenes to make sure my music video had a bit of variety. As the song is so repetitive I’m worried that my video could get boring, which I felt this video by Juliana did become. From analysing her work, I now know the importance of a range of locations and interesting shots.
